Getting ready to seal my body with System 3 epoxy and was wondering how many of you use epoxy sealers and how many do the top as well as the B/S?

EDIT: Yeah meant to say pore filler, not sealer.

I believe epoxy is used as a 'pore filler' rather than a 'sealer'. I think the schedual is to 1st 'seal' with shellac, then fill with epoxy. And I've never heard of anyone using epoxy on a top, assuming it's spruce or something fine grained. Tops are usually just sealed with shellac, then finish applied. I could be wrong though, and if so, I'm sure someone will chime in with corrections.

I use epoxy on the top, I don't shellac my tops anymore other than to just seal them from dirt and grime, I normally can do the top in two very thin coats. Sides and backs usually take 3 depending on the wood, I know some people get a little edgy about it effecting the sound but it's no different than using any other filler and I end up with a super thin coat when finished.

Never put shellac under epoxy.....epoxy will not bond well when applied over shellac. You can however put shellac over epoxy.

I have on several occasions use Zpoxy finishing resin on top not really for fill but to add an aged look to the top. I dilute the Zpoxy 60% alcohol and 40% Zpoxy.
adds a nice amber tint to spruce. Really pops bearclaw. I have one coming off the bench in about a moth or so that has had zpoxy applied in this manner.MichaelP38746.8903819444
